Psychiatry is the branch of medicine involved in diagnosing and treating disorders of the mind. In most cases, the exact cause of the psychiatric disorder - in other words, the underlying disorder in the brain - is not known. So, instead of being able to isolate the cause, as is possible in other types of medicine - such as finding bacteria in, say, meningitis - psychiatrists and other doctors have to rely on accounts of the individual's personal experiences and on observations of his or her behaviour. This can make it difficult to be absolutely precise about the definition and causes of a particular psychiatric disorder. The perception of what is abnormal also varies with the society and culture in which the individual lives, and a doctor's assessment may require difficult judgements.
